Epithelia: Classification - more

Some rules:

When attempting to classify an epithelium

  1. Does it have one layer, or two or more layers? (Simple or stratified?)
  2. What shape do the cells have?
  3. Are there any specialisations?

A. questionWhat type of epithelium is lining this blood vessel, indicated by the arrows, which are pointing to the nuclei of the lining cells?

Reveal the answers ...

A - simple squamous epithelium - single layer of cells, and they are very flat. Therefore, this must be simple squamous epithelium. There are no specialisations. This type of epithelium lines blood vessels, where it is usually called the endothelium. It also lines body cavities - where it is usually called the mesothelium.

B. questionWhat type of epithelium is this? How many layers of cells? and what sort of specialisations do some of the cells have?

Reveal the answers ...

B. This is a tall columnar pseudostratified epithelium with goblet cells and cilia. The nuclei of this epithelium are at different heights, but in fact, there is only a single layer of cells. This type of epithelium is called pseudostratified. As well as tall columnar cells, there are some different types of cell in the epithelium called goblet cells. On the apical surface of the cell, the tall columnar cells have fine projections called cilia.

C. questionWhat sort of epithelium is this?

Reveal the answers ...

 C. This is the same as B, but stained differently!

D.questionWhat sort of epithelium is this?

Reveal the answers ...

D. Transitional - notice how there are several layers of cells, and how they change shape.

E.questionWhat sort of epithelium is this?

E. Stratified squamous keratinising - this type of epithelium is protective - this is the epithelium of skin.

F.questionWhat sort of epithelium is this?

Reveal the answers ...

F. Stratified cuboidal - this type of epithelium is often found lining ducts.
